How to make a wooden off centre pendant on the wood lathe

Tools and materials I propose:

Lathe

Bandsaw

Hot glue gun kit

Buffing kit

Heat gun

Chuck kit

Tormek T8 Sharpening System

Tormek Woodturner’s Kit

In this video I make a pendant out of ambrosia maple wood.

I want to thank my friend Mikael Masters for this beautiful wood. You can check Mikael’s work here:

I begun by drawing my basic design with a compass. I then drilled the hole for the strap on the drill press. I did that now because later I would have lost my mark.

I then cut the basic shape on the bandsaw.

Next I screwed a piece of plywood on my face plate.

To centre the piece easier I added circles on the piece with a pencil.

Then I hot glued my blank on the plywood.

I used my bowl gouge to shape the piece. Then I heated a spatula and removed the piece from the face plate.

Using the hole I created earlier I re-mounted the piece on the face plate with a new centre point.

I then shaped again with the bowl gouge.

I sanded the piece. I then applied a coat of sealer. Then I wet sanded to 600 and finally I buffed the piece with carnauba wax.

And that was it. I think it came out beautiful. See you soon with a new project video.

How to make a wood carving mallet on the lathe

Tools and materials I propose:

Lathe

Chuck kit

Tormek T8 Sharpening System

Tormek Woodturner’s Kit

Electric Chainsaw

Wire Burning Kit

I begun with a piece of spalted platani.

I first cut it to size with my chainsaw. Then I found it’s centres and turned it true on the lathe with a roughing gouge.

I then shaped it with the bowl gouge to fit my hand.

With the skew and a wire burner, I created a few lines on the handle for better grip.

I then cut it off the lathe and applied a coat of mineral oil.

My mallet turned out really nice.

But that was it, see you soon with a new project video.

Woodturning a hollow vessel with carved elements

Tools and materials I propose:

Lathe

Wood turning tools set

Chuck kit

Tormek T8 Sharpening System

Tormek Woodturner’s Kit

PROXXON Longneck Angle Grinder

Foredom Woodcarving Kit

Bandsaw

Flexcut starter carving set

In this video I make a hollow vessel with carved elements out of poplar.

I begun by cutting my blank on the bandsaw.

I then turned it true between centres and created the tenon for my chuck.

I shaped my piece and then drilled my depth hole.

I started hollowing with my bowl gouge. I also used the hook tool and side scrapper.

I then divided my piece and started carving  the elements.

Finally I cleaned the bottom and applied a coat of mineral oil.

And it was ready. I am really happy with the result. See you soon with a new project video.

Upgrading my garden hoe plus making a planting tool

Tools and materials I propose:

Stick welder

Lathe

Wood turning tools set

Wire Burning Kit

Electric Chainsaw

Angle grinder

Drill press

Wire Brush Kit For Drill

Foredom Woodcarving Kit

Tormek T8 Sharpening System

Tormek Woodturner’s Kit

Tormek Hand Tool Sharpening Kit

Tormek BGM-100 Bench Grinder Mounting Set

In this video I do a really useful upgrade for my gardening hoe, plus I make a planting tool on the woodturning lathe.

With this project I wanted to solve the eternal loose handle problem. So I decided to replace the wooden handle of the hoe by welding a metal pipe in it’s place.

I begun by cleaning the pipe with a wire brush.

I then re-establish a new bevel on the cutting edge of the hoe. I used my tormek jigs on my bench top grinder.

I then stick ended the two metal parts.

Using my rotary tool I cleaned the welds a little bit.

I then added a coat of primer and then a coat of black to keep rust away.

For the bottom I turned a small conical piece out of beech which I epoxied in place. This makes the tool a little bit easier to hold on an upright position and also prevents it from slipping from your hand.

I then used a piece of platani to turn a planting tool. This is basically a cone with a handle. You push it against the ground to make a hole and then you place your plant in the soil.

September is the month for my winter veggies garden. So I had to make these two tools.

But that was it. See you soon with a new project video.
